At some point in the interview, you may have to ask questions that would probably rattle your interviewee, such as his alleged links to terrorist organisations or a rumoured affair. You can ask sources questions like, “My interviews so far have produced conflicting views on whether…?”, “My editor insists I do not leave without asking you...?” Shake the tree, but do not lie, or identify other sources. For example, you may say: “It might interest you to know that another source told me he saw you…” or “There is a rumour you have, but we all know how unreliable rumours are.”
